I put an N64 in my basement
I've got an Everdrive, and the N64 is connected to a little 12" CRT. Crucially, I don't get WiFi coverage in my basement. If I'm down there, there are no distractions. N64 games in particular come from an era where there was not quite as much hand-holding. There are usually no quick-saves. Games are not afraid to boot you back to the start of the level if you fail. I don't want to play this up too much: your average N64 game is significantly easier than an arcade game from the era, or nearly anything on NES or SNES. N64 games are not really hard, it's just that the "friction" points have not been sanded to zero in the ways that modern games have.
N64 Quake, a favorite of mine, is not especially difficult. But you need to play the whole level. There is no mid-level saving. So when you play, you do really need to focus on the game. You feel the tension at the end of a level. You know you can beat the level, but if you just make one mistake; dodge a projectile poorly, fall into the lava, etc -- then the whole level is over. This is a tension that many modern games have lost. In addition, there's nothing next to me that can distract me: no internet, no chat, nothing. Just a game. When the game stops being fun, I go upstairs. Usually I play for 10-20 minutes at a time at most. Often, I'll do a level after my morning workout. (our gym is also in the basement)
This has honestly been the most fun I've had with gaming in a long time. The N64 games are not better, but rather the constant modern distractions have made everything worse, to including gaming.
