Just a small note on a quote towards the bottom of the rant:
"We don't even have to put Flock cameras in neighborhoods. All the civilians will do the work for us. AND THEY'LL PAY FOR IT THEMSELVES. EVERYONE WILL BE WATCHED FOR EVERY MOMENT THEY STEP OUTSIDE LESSSSGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
A lot of the privacy community (of which I would consider myself a member) believes that the government is just spying on people for "mustache-twirling-villain" reasons. Flock cameras, smart phones, and other technologies provide an alternate set of lessons:
- many people value safety more than privacy or liberty
- people love leisure more than they love freedom
I'm very happy that there is such a huge Flock backlash currently, but I really don't expect it to amount to much in the long term. A lot of technology is a ratchet; once it exists people cannot go back, they can only tighten. These days, technology is advanced enough to allow for many, many things. Most of things we're stuck with technologically are choices. A smart phone was not "required" just 10 years ago. Smart phones could be built to be anonymous. There's really nothing requiring tracking in cars, or around the web, or anything else.
But, we only seem to know how to go one direction, save for marginal hold-outs.
